It is undeniably a divisive subject within the church community, sparking debates and raising valid concerns regarding child safety. Why should men not serve in the nursery? This question immediately caught my attention, as it seemed to perpetuate outdated gender stereotypes. Men, just like women, possess the ability to nurture and care for children. They are fathers who have changed diapers and played with their own babies. Therefore, the argument that men are incapable or unsafe in this role seems baseless.
It is crucial to acknowledge the valid concerns that some parents may have regarding bad actors.. Statistically, the majority of bad actors are male, and this fact can understandably cause apprehension. However, it is vital to remember that having background checks and implementing proper safety protocols, such as having at least two unrelated adults present at all times, significantly reduces any potential risk. With these measures in place, parents can have peace of mind and trust in the safety of their children.
One argument against men serving in the nursery stems from a fear associated with men in positions of power. Historically, men have held more influential roles within the church, and unfortunately, some have abused that power. However, it is essential to recognize that women can also be bad actors. By simply excluding men based on their gender, we fail to address the potential for abuse from anyone, regardless of gender.
Children need positive male role models in their lives. The nursery provides an excellent opportunity for men to actively engage with children, demonstrating compassion, care, and guiding them in their faith. By disallowing men from serving in this capacity, we inadvertently perpetuate the notion that caring for children is solely "women's work." It's time to move past these gender stereotypes and recognize the importance of all individuals contributing to the spiritual development of children.
