Don’t get me wrong, balance literacy has its perks. I can personally tell you that I have seen tons and tons of children increase their reading skills and capabilities because of balanced literacy. However, they also lacked the ability to decode unknown words. 🤯Even when I was using the balanced literacy model, I still provided my students with explicit and systematic, phonics instruction. 💯 This is because children don’t naturally learn the English language.
